Happy 21st Birthday Sonic!

Today marks the 21st anniversary of the release of Sonic the Hedgehog on the Mega Drive for both American and European territories. From his beginnings as a 'cool dude's Mario', through his uncomfortable tradition to the world of 3D, and his darkest days in the late 2000's, Sonic, mainly thanks to Sonic Generations, is a respectable series once again.

Sega haven't exactly made a big song and dance about his birthday, although they have reduced the prices of may digitally distributed Sonic games as well as adding bonus content to some others. However Sega's promise of Sonic;s longevity is coming in the future line-up of Sonic games. Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing Transformed is on its way, and Sonic Adventure 2 will see a HD re-release later this year.

And what will I be doing to mark the occasion? Well, I'll be trying to get those last few red rings on Sonic Generations as well as having a playthrough of Sonic & Knuckles later today, and maybe I'll squeeze in some Sonic Spinball if I have time, you can find out why via this article I wrote on Sega Addicts a few days ago.

So here's to Sonic, both in the past, the present, and the future and I'll leave you all with a video of Crush 40 wishing a happy birthday to Sonic in front of a crowd of paralytic Japanese people.
